Backlinks are really important in the world of Search Engine Optimization. If you want your site to do well in google search results you have to have a good page rank. If you want a higher page rank you're going to need some backlinks.

Backlinks are simply a link from somewhere else to your site.

It's a really easy concept, in fact, it's really easy to do. Making a backlink only takes a minute or two. That's not too bad. However, when you are talking about having thousands of backlinks to your site, you start talking in the thousands of minutes and that IS a long time.

Backlinks are incoming links to a website or web page. Inbound links were originally important (prior to the emergence of search engines) as a primary means of web navigation; today their significance lies in search engine optimization (SEO). The number of backlinks is one indication of the popularity or importance of that website or page (though other measures, such as PageRank, are also considered to be important). Outside of SEO, the backlinks of a webpage may be of significant personal, cultural or semantic interest: they indicate who is paying attention to that page.
In basic link terminology, a backlink is any link received by a web node (web page, directory, website, or top level domain) from another web node [1]. Backlinks are also known as incoming links, inbound links, inlinks, and inward links.

Link building is one of the most important factors to get your site to rank higher in search engines. It increases your site traffic. But it all starts and ends with the Quality of the Backlinks that you have for your website. Link building plays an important role in higher search engine placements and it promotes traffic to your website provided that the links (backlinks) to your site appear to be created naturally. If you build too many backlinks too quickly, you will be penalized by the search engines. If you get 100+ links per day, there is a 99% possibility that Google will treat your backlinks as 'spam' links and your ranking will plummet. There are many sites which offer 10,000 or say 20,000 backlinks for few bucks in a week. While it may sound good to have that many links to your site, you are creating 'spam' links from sites which are considered bad quality sites. This will only damage your pocketbook and will do nothing for your rankings.

If your site doesn't have incoming links from other websites, the site will not be displayed in Google. You must have at least one backlink for your site to be indexed in Google. So your target is to gain highest number of quality backlinks from other websites that have PR5 to PR10.

Unlike Bing and Yahoo which are more driven by factors on your site (though together they hold less than 25% of the search engine market), Google uses backlinks (on other sites) to figure out if your new site on, say, Siamese fighting fish, should rank highly on their search engine results or not.
Google will consider the so-called anchor text in the link (the word or phrase that is linked) and the authority of the site that the link is coming from to determine how highly or lowly your site should rank. And when it comes to Google organic search engine results, backlinks are pretty much all you have to influence the ranking success of your site.
